Photographer’s Notes:

Sarah and Jason’s destination wedding at Casa Ybel Resort in Sanibel Island, Florida was such a perfect event. We had crystal blue skies with reasonable summer temps and the bugs were not too bad!  Their ceremony was on the lawn near their rooms, over looking the white sandy beaches and the reception was a beautiful white tent event on the lawn outside of the Thistle Lodge (the restaurant for Casa Ybel). A DJ with a Class (Jim Dahlia) was there playing the perfect songs which made everyone stay on the dance floor the entire night!

We had a blast documenting their day and I hope you enjoy our favorite images shown above as well as inspire off of what the bride had to say, post wedding.

Happy Planning!

Interview with the Bride:

Maria: Why did you choose Casa Ybel as your venue?

Sarah:  I wanted a venue that was more “all-inclusive” so that I did not have to deal with tons of vendors considering I was planning a destination wedding. Also, Casa Ybel was the perfect size venue for the intimate setting I wanted, but my guests would still have the great amenities that larger resorts offer.

Maria: How long did it take to find your wedding dress?

Sarah: It was the first dress that I tried on.

Maria: How did you decide on the shoes you wore?

Sarah: I wanted a wedge since everything was going to be outside on grass. Also, I wanted a neutral color instead of white. I liked that my shoes were completely leather and had gold accents because I felt like they were a modern “dressier” version of a wedge sandal.

Maria: What was your inspiration for the decor of your wedding? Sarah: Beach Rustic was our theme. I wanted my decor to be simple but still unique and detailed. Hence, the hand decorated mason jars and custom cut tree slices. We simplified the look of our decor by using baby’s breath as our main flower choice.

Maria: Did you set a budget or price point to stay within before officially planning your wedding?

Sarah: We did.

Maria:  If so, were you successful in doing so?

Sarah: We came in a bit higher but we mostly stayed on track.

Maria: Was there anything that costs more than you originally anticipated?

Sarah: Photography (ha) & Wedding Dress

Maria: Did you face any obstacles while planning your wedding? And if so, how did you overcome?

Sarah: We did, we had a sick mother on one side and recently divorced parents on the other, which provided quite a few obstacles that we had to overcome. We took everything as it came with Jason’s mom’s care and making her comfortable for the wedding (i.e. renting a beach wheelchair and hiring a caregiver to accommodate her needs for the weekend). With my parents, outside of the enormous anxiety they caused me leading up to the wedding, for the actual wedding day I made very intentional ceremony and reception seating arrangements that created “space” between them to help keep the peace.

Maria: Looking back on your wedding day, is there any advice, tips, or warnings for the current bride planning her wedding?

Sarah: I would suggest talking to your DJ beforehand more than I did so that they know your expectations.  In my head all I thought they did was “play music” so I had no idea that the DJ would act more as an event planner and have so many questions. I would have rather given him instructions way beforehand rather than the week-of-the-wedding and at my actual Reception.

Maria: How long did it take to plan your dream wedding?

Sarah: We had our key vendors (i.e. Venue, Photographer, Florist) all booked within 2 months of our engagement. We were engaged for 9 months and I had everything else booked and selected by 6 months in to our engagement. My most difficult item to book was my photographer so bride’s need to make booking photography just as urgent and important as booking a venue in the beginning! I lucked out as one of my top choices (Maria Angela Photography) was still available for my date, and that was with me booking her at 7 months out!
